Why Picking ‘One Thing’ To Do With Your Life Is BS

What gets so many of us feeling STUCK…

Is thinking we have to pick ONE job or career and commit to it forever.

It’s why so many 20 year olds feel lost and confused.

It’s why when you hit 30+ you freak out about changing direction.

Because you HAVE to get it right.

Breaking this ^^ BS paradigm is vital if you want to figure out a new direction for your work and life.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a great example of someone who changed career multiple times.

He’s been a bodybuilder, actor AND politician.

If you’re anything like Cathy and I, you probably have multiple interests.

You’re curious to explore several paths – if you haven’t done so already.

You don’t want to be confined to one thing because you’re multi-passionate.

When I left my TV career, I wanted to start a blog because one of my interests was to become a writer.

I also love meditation so I started teaching it and created a beginner’s course.

But I didn’t just want to be a meditation teacher and be confined to that box.

It made me feel trapped.

I wanted to take a more holistic approach by helping people redesign their lives across multiple areas, using different tools, practices and ideas – exactly like I’d been redesigning my life over the previous decade and continue to do so now.

So Big Life Experiment evolved beyond teaching only meditation.

As I create more time and space in my life, I have other passions and interests I want to explore beyond this business we’re building.

I want to go back to writing poetry and experiment with being a spoken word artist.

I want to learn to DJ and play some gigs.

I want to become an athlete (in some form), a childhood dream of mine.

And I’m sure there are other passions I’ll discover and pursue as I get older.

As we evolve and grow our paths will undoubtedly change, and so too will our work.

This idea that we have to figure out what we want to do for the rest of our life, that we have to pick one thing and commit…

Is what keeps us living in so much fear of getting it wrong, that we fail to act.

‘What if I make the wrong choice?’

Well… what if there is no WRONG choice?

Instead you make a choice because it’s what you feel called to do right now and be open to changing it as you start exploring.

When we started a new direction for our work and life, Cathy thought she was going to create a natural cosmetic product business, and after some research decided it wasn’t for her.

Having run an outdoor fitness business in 2014 for 3 years, she decided to pursue this passion once more and became an online fitness coach.

After a year she pivoted to join me in building Big Life Experiment.

The key is not just figuring out what you want to DO.

It’s figuring out WHO you are and HOW you want to live your life.

^^ This includes discovering your passions, gifts and natural talents.

It includes discovering your values and what matters to you most.

it includes getting clear on how you want to spend your days, weeks, months and years.

Then expressing this through the work you feel called to pursue in this moment.

Maybe the next thing you choose is ‘the one thing’ you do for the rest of your life.

Maybe it’s just for the next decade.

Maybe it’s just for a year.

Maybe it’s the stepping stone to something else.

What matters is allowing yourself to explore and experiment with the next option and being open to seeing where it goes.
